  Whether this'll actually improve school standards remains to be seen (my guess: sometimes), but that hasn't stopped Gove's department from gleefully announcing the number of academies at every opportunity, as if were an end in itself. It isn't. But results in education, like those in public spending, are slow to emerge and difficult to measure. Much easier to announce the numbers you've got and hope it creates the impression you're achieving something.
